Enhancing Learning with Movement Exercises at Little Acorn
At Little Acorn, MORE than a Montessori preschool in Rancho Bernardo, we’re all about making learning a joyful, whole-body experience. One of our students’ favorite activities is rocking along to our Invertebrates Song. This simple yet powerful movement not only brings joy but also strengthens core muscles and supports crucial cognitive development. With families joining us from areas like 4S Ranch, Del Sur, Rancho Santa Fe, Carmel Mountain, Scripps Ranch, Rancho Peñasquitos, Poway, and Escondido, our program draws from the best of Montessori, Waldorf, and Reggio philosophies. And to further meet the needs of our community, we also offer an after-school program that continues our focus on movement-based learning.
Why Rocking and Rolling Matters for children in our Toddler Program and Preschool
Rocking is a rhythmic movement that bring significant benefits to both the body and the brain. These actions engage the vestibular and proprioceptive systems, helping children build body awareness and improve balance. Rocking provides gentle sensory input that soothes and grounds the nervous system, while rolling activates core muscles and refines motor planning. Both movements together lay the foundation for advanced motor skills and contribute to calmness and focus in our Montessori classroom activities.
Learning Benefits for Children in our Toddler Program, Preschool, and TK
Our daily practice of rocking with the Invertebrates Song allows children to:
- Strengthen Core Muscles: Core strength is fundamental to body stability, and rocking and rolling reinforce this, benefiting posture and coordination.
- Develop Balance and Spatial Awareness: These movements help children better understand their body in space, improving balance and preparing them for future physical challenges.
- Boost Focus and Attention: The rhythmic motion of rocking is soothing, helping children regulate their energy and settle into learning with greater focus.
- Enhance Memory and Rhythm: By pairing movement with the Invertebrates Song, we’re helping children remember lyrics and concepts about nature in a fun, memorable way.
Supporting the Brain and Body Connection while LEARNING!
At Little Acorn Lane, we incorporate these movements thoughtfully into our curriculum to bring learning to life. During circle times, rocking and rolling not only engage the body but also make abstract ideas, like invertebrates, more tangible and fun. As children are being worms or rolly pollies, swaying, singing, and rocking, they’re deeply immersed in both the movement and the music, connecting to the lesson with their whole selves.
