Teaching Friendship through the story ‘Star Money’ in our Montessori Toddler, Preschool, and TK

A Grimm’s Fairytale Puppet Show

At Little Acorn Lane, an Extraordinary and Affordable Montessori Toddler, Preschool, and TK Program in Rancho Bernardo, near 4S Ranch, Santaluz, Del Sur, Carmel Mountain, Scripps Ranch, Rancho Penasquitos, Torrey Highlands, Pacific Highlands Ranch, Poway, Rancho Santa Fe and Escondido, San Diego, we love using classic stories to teach important life lessons, and one of our favorites is the Grimm’s fairy tale “Star Money.” This beautiful story illustrates the power of kindness and the joy that comes from giving to others. The tale follows a young girl who gives away everything she has to those in need, and in return, she is showered with stars that turn into coins. The deeper message? When we give freely of ourselves—whether it’s our possessions, time, or love—we receive something far more valuable: friendship and happiness.

Teaching Friendship Through the Story of “Star Money”

In our Toddler, Preschool, and T/K Program, the concept of friendship is something children are learning to cultivate. At Little Acorn Lane Preschool, we use the Grimm’s fairy tale “Star Money” to guide children in understanding how to build friendships through the act of giving. Just as the little girl in the story gave everything she had, we encourage our students in our Toddler, Preschool and T/K Program to share their love, their smiles, and even their hugs. Beyond that, we inspire them to share their most precious gift—their friendships. Including someone new in play, offering a toy to a new friend, or simply showing kindness with a smile or hug are essential ways to build friendships and foster meaningful bonds.

Why Storytelling?

At Little Acorn Lane, a Montessori Toddler, Preschool, and TK in Rancho Bernardo and next to 4S Ranch, Santaluz, Torrey Highlands, Pacific Highlands Ranch, Del Sur, Rancho Santa Fe and surrounding areas, we use storytelling as a gentle yet powerful way to help children grasp these lessons about how to build friendships. Rather than simply telling them to share, we show them the rewards of generosity through the characters in our stories. During our circle times, we discuss how to build friendships by offering smiles, hugs, and invitations to play. For instance, we talk about how giving a hug brings joy not only to the one receiving it but also to the one offering it, reinforcing how these acts of kindness are key to building lasting friendships. We even practice giving hugs during circle time, which helps strengthen these bonds. We can see shyness melt away during these special hugging times at circle time.

Through stories like “Star Money,” children in our Toddler, Preschool, and T/K Program learn that building friendships is about opening our hearts, sharing our love, and welcoming others into our world. This forms the foundation of their social-emotional development, which is crucial at this stage of life. And the best part? These lessons, taught through storytelling and shared experiences, last a lifetime. They teach children that friendship is a treasure that grows when shared freely. Here at Little Acorn Lane Preschool, a Montessori School that also embraces Waldorf principles, we love focusing on how to build friendships and creating a loving environment where children can thrive.
